Performs field and depot maintenance on dial central office telephone exchange equipment.
Must be qualified as Dial Central Office Repairman (36H40); must know general telephone facilities requirements of corps or larger elements; must know capabilities of subordinate and attached unit to provide telephone services; must be able to provide estimates and details of traffic loads, communication facilities employment, and equipment requirements; must be able to assist in planning and coordination of activities pertaining to wire communications in corps or larger Army element.
Must know electrical fundamentals, including principles of magnetism, electromagnetism, inductance, capacitance, transmission of sound by wire, automatic telephony, XY dial systems, all-relay systems, and their application to circuitry dial central office telephone exchange equipment; must know operation of dial telephone central office equipment components; must know inside and outside plant layout, operation, and routine testing procedures applicable thereto; must know most common causes of malfunction and non-function of dial central office telephone equipment; must know function and use of measuring devices and testing instruments pertinent to dial central office exchanges; must know use of diagrams and schematic symbols; must know functions of switch trains, selector shelf, trunk hunting, line finder circuits, and dial central office repeaters; must be able to measure voltage, resistance, and current in series, parallel, and series-paralleled circuits; must be able to troubleshoot, diagnose, and locate malfunctions, replace parts and repair stronger two-motion switches, rotary line switches, connector switches, line finders, vertical and rotary stepping switches, central office repeaters, power equipment, transmission batteries, switchboards, XY dial systems, all-relay systems, A and C type relays and associated parts and components; must be able to test dial central office circuits and outside plant; must be able to lace, strip, butt, form, fan, and solder switchboard distribution cable; must be able to read and understand circuit diagrams and schematic symbols; must be able to use electricians common and specialized hand tools, measuring devices, and test instruments; must be able to adjust relays and switch mechanisms on dial telephone equipment; must be able to compute voltage amperage, and resistance factors by use of simple algebraic formulas; must be qualified as Dial Central Office Repairman (36H20 or 36H30); must know standard performance and maintenance specifications applicable to central office equipment; must know techniques and procedures for technical inspection of central office equipment; must be able to inspect and test dead lined equipment to determine causes of breakdown and extent of repair or rebuild required; must be able to compare performance and condition of equipment with established standards to ascertain adequacy of repair or rebuild.
