Serves as yardmaster, conductor or brake-coupler in makeup and movement of railway cars and trains.

Performs as brake-coupler; receives orders for switching; performs car coupling operations, insuring correct connections; performs car uncoupling operations, insuring proper release; applies transportation safety rules, railway signal indications, and operating principles of brake and coupling systems in yard work; performs lubrication orders on railway cars; makes signals with fuses, torpedoes, hand, flags, lamps, and engine whistles; places placarded cars in trains, and insures cars are properly loaded in consonance with clearances and gages; prepares and interprets transportation forms and documents; prepares reports, lists and records of yard and road railway operations; inspects wheels, flanges, wheel housing, air hose couplings, brakeshoes, doors, and car couplings to determine operating condition of equipment; makes adjustments to lashing and bracing to assure safe hauling of cargo; interprets train orders and timetables to determine schedule of train; executes hand signals for starting locomotives and moving train in accordance with train orders; observes signals along route to keep abreast of progress of train and relays instructions to other train crew members; inspects cars at route stops; connects and disconnects cars on sidings and spurs; controls movement of switch engines in railway yards with appropriate hand signals; throws switches to maneuver trains onto different sections of track, and spots cars as instructed; supervises operation of railroad train; coordinates train movements; reviews and interprets train orders and time tables to determine and outline schedule of train; executes hand signals to give train crew member and brake-coupler directions for starting and movement of train; passes changes in train schedules to train crew; instructs and supervises train crew members and brake-couplers in connecting and disconnecting trains and cars and switching cars to sidings or spurs; supervises railway yard operations; supervises handling, classification, and switching of cars and trains in railway yards; records, receives, writes, and transmits train orders; employs methods for handling high, wide, or heavy loads during movement; employs lashing and bracing principles to secure cargo in railway cars; conducts on-the-job training of subordinates; prepares and distributes railway car reports; maintains record of daily movement of railway cars to include number on hand in yard; directs search of missing or misplaced cars; assures adherence to railway safety procedures; coordinates rail yard activities; reviews, consolidates and prepares technical, personnel and administrative reports covering railway yard activities.

Must be able to supervise personnel performing duties of MOS 65B, 65D, 65G, 65H, 65J or 65K at skill level 4; serves as principal NCO in railway operating, maintenance-of-way or repair company, or operations section of railway battalion or higher level organization; advises on all matters relating to railway operations, maintenance-of-way, and repair; monitors and controls railway, passenger, and freight traffic; prepares, reproduces, and distributes operation reports; edits and prepares training material; assists in coordination and implementation of operations, training programs, and administrative activities; maintains records of strength, location and employment of railway personnel, and equipment; coordinates railway operations and maintenance; consolidates, prepares, reviews, and processes regular and special reports of command railway activities; performs principal noncommissioned officer duties associated with SQI M; provides advice and makes, recommendations to the commander aid staff on all matters pertain to enlisted personnel and their families; accompanies the commander on inspections and visits and at ceremonies; assists in inspection of command activities facilities aid personnel as prescribed by the commander; holds First Sergeants' or Sergeants' Major call to announce information and instructions; insures that newly assigned enlisted personnel are instructed in military courtesy, customs, of the service, and command regulations or policies; provides counsel and guidance to NCOs and other enlisted personnel of the command; inspects duties performed by subordinate NCOs; notes discrepancies and initiates appropriate corrective action; assists in reception of visitors to the command; sits as president or, member of command promotion board for NCOs, as authorized by regulations; performs other duties prescribed by, the commander.
