Supervises reconnaissance studies and reconnoiters survey sites to determine special requirements of obstacles encountered; plans and arranges for food service, housing, sanitation, transportation, and other facilities for topographic survey activities in remote areas; plans and organizes work activities; coordinates surveying and computing activities; supervises field survey activities in support of task and mission requirements; determines composition and operational procedures of topographic survey parties; collects available charts, maps, control lists, aerial photographs, and other topographic data; the topographic engineering supervisor supervises topographic surveying, cartography and photolithography activities; assists in topographic planning and control activities; assists in determining requirements and providing technical supervision of topographic mapping and other military geographic intelligence programs, to include geodetic and topographic surveying activities; assists in command supervision and coordination of map reproduction and topographic map supply programs; provides staff supervision and principal noncommissioned officer direction to units engaged in performing topographic engineering missions.
Records topographic survey data, operates survey instruments, and performs topographic computations; constructs and erects survey towers/stands; transports, sets up, operates, and maintains equipment according to written, oral or visual instructions from supervisors; prepares abstracts of field data for final computations; assists in the emplacement/recovery of control stations and prepares station descriptions cards; computes abstracted survey data for final tabulation of survey project; transports, sets up, operates and maintains equipment according to written, oral or visual instructions from supervisors; computes and adjusts first, second and third order horizontal/vertical control surveys; computes elevations of tidal benchmarks and baselines; performs preliminary/field computation to verify field observations for control surveys and computes preliminary values of horizontal and vertical control points; determines and writes equations used in least square adjustments; transforms, in the same system, coordinates and azimuths from one zone to adjacent zones; operates and writes programs for programmable electronic calculators; directs and controls personnel when acting as a survey party chief; recommends method of computation, adjustment and need for additional data; computes geographic positions, elevations, astronomic and place azimuths and latitude and longitude from astronomical observations; evaluates and verifies results of all computations; directs the transportation of, set up, operation and maintenance of equipment according to written, oral or visual instructions; performs survey reconnaissance to include picture point selection, main, and secondary survey station placement and evaluates field data and the results obtained; analyzes traverse, triangulation, leveling, satellite, and trilateration data to isolate computational or field blunders;
The topographic engineering supervisor supervises topographic surveying, cartography and photolithography activities; assists in topographic planning and control activities; assists in determining requirements and providing technical supervision of topographic mapping and other military geographic intelligence programs, to include geodetic and topographic surveying activities; assists in command supervision and coordination of map reproduction and topographic map supply programs; provides staff supervision and principal noncommissioned officer direction to units engaged in performing topographic engineering missions; provides advice and makes recommendations to the commander and staff on all matters pertaining to enlisted soldiers and their families; accompanies the commander on inspections, visits and ceremonies; assists in inspection of command activities, facilities and personnel as prescribed by the commander; ensures adherence to command policies; holds first sergeants' or sergeants' major call to announce information and instruction; ensures that newly assigned enlisted personnel are instructed in military courtesy, customs of the service and command regulations or policies; responsible for monitoring training or conducts training of enlisted soldiers; assesses training at all levels and provides feedback to appropriate commanders and leaders; provides counsel and guidance to NCOs and other enlisted soldiers of the command; responsible for and provides guidance on Non-Commissioned Officer Education System (NCOES) and Non-Commissioned Officer Development Program (NCODP); inspects duties performed by subordinate NCOs; notes discrepancies and initiates appropriate corrective action; assists in reception of visitors to the command; serves as president or member of command promotion board or removal board for NCOs, as authorized by regulations; sits as chairperson or member of a command's Military Member of the Quarter/Year competition for enlisted soldiers or NCOs, as directed by local regulations; responsible for quality, control and training of noncommissioned officer evaluation reports (NCOER) while ensuring timely submissions; reviews evaluation reports to determine compliance with policies and procedures and recommends corrective actions on deficiencies to commanders, other leaders and rating officials; performs other duties prescribed by the commander; assists in the professional development of junior and company grade officer.
