Studies soils origin, distribution, and composition.

Provides advice and makes, recommendations to the commander aid staff on all matters pertain to enlisted personnel and their families; accompanies the commander on inspections and visits and at ceremonies; assists in inspection of command activities facilities aid personnel as prescribed by the commander; holds first sergeants' or sergeants' major call to announce information and instructions; insures that newly assigned enlisted personnel are instructed in military courtesy, customs, of the service, and command regulations or policies; provides counsel and guidance to NCOs and other enlisted personnel of the command; inspects duties performed by subordinate NCOs; notes discrepancies and initiates appropriate corrective action; assists in reception of visitors to the command; sits as president or, member of command promotion board for NCOs, as authorized by regulations; performs other duties prescribed by, the commander.

Must know procedures and techniques involved in standard test on soils, concrete, aggregates, bituminous, and other base materials; must know mathematics including metric system and simple algebraic equations; must know how to distinguish and identify types of soils and construction materials by observation; must be able to plot graphs to show graphic representation of test results; must be able to use analytic scales in obtaining accurate weights of soil samples.

Must be able to perform the duties of Soils Analyst (51G20); Crawler Tractor Operator (62E20); Crane Operator (62F30); General Construction Machine Operator (62J30); Grader Operator (62K20); Wheeled Tractor Operator (62L20); or Rough Terrain Forklift and Loader Operator (62M20); supervises employment of construction machinery in support of construction operations; organizes machinery operations phases of construction projects; supervises operation of unit engaged in construction equipment operation; estimates equipment and operator requirements for specific jobs; selects equipment such as soil mixing, aggregate drying, and asphalt distributing and finishing machines, crawler tractors and attachments, cranes and crane shovels, pneumatic and internal combustion powered machines used in drilling, crushing, grading and cleaning rock and gravel, concrete producing and paving machines, power rollers, air compressors, entrenching machines, well drilling equipment, earth augers, rotary brooms and tillers, water distributors, graders and attachments, wheeled tractors and attachments, heavy duty quarry trucks, rough terrain forklifts, and scoop loaders; allocates equipment to different jobs; coordinates construction machinery operations with related construction work; observes machine operations and inspects finished products; enforces safety rules; prepares progress reports; prepares reports on personnel, machine operations, training, and related subjects; evaluates work performance and recommends such actions as reassignment of duties and requirements for training; must be able to perform the duties of an Asphalt Equipment Operator (62D40), Quarryman (62G40); Concrete Paving Equipment Operator (62H40); or Construction Machine Supervisor (62N40); serves as First Sergeant of a company; interprets and supervises execution of company policy and SOP; assists in planning, coordinating, and supervising, all activities that support the company mission; advises company commander on all matters concerning enlisted personnel, to include assignments, reassignments, transfers, promotions, granting of passes and leave, punishments, welfare, privileges and awards; directs and coordinates company administration; forms unit for drill, ceremonies, and other military formations; receives report of personnel present and absent, and reports number of unauthorized absences; holds NCO call to disseminate instructions and information to subordinate enlisted supervisors; coordinates operation of company food service and supply activities; assists company commander in accomplishing unit training; assists in inspection of organizational activities as prescribed by commander, observes discrepancies, and initiates appropriate corrective action.
